View Full Version : How to create floor/wall look?

I'm trying to get an effect on a new canvas that would make it look like a floor fading off to a wall. Let's say that the top two-thirds of the canvas would be the wall and the bottom third would be the floor. The way I see it, the front of the floor would be lighter and fade to a slightly darker tone to the "intersection" of the floor and wall and then the upper part of the wall would be lighter than the lower part.
It seems to me that one could accomplish this with a custom gradient and I've certainly tried but without success. Any tips or examples would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Paul

Actually you don't even need a custom gradient. Two normal gradients will work.
New document white background
Select the top portion of your image that you want to be the wall... Grab the gradient tool, set the colors to default (d) and lower the gradient opacity to 50%....drag a black to white gradient from the bottom of the selection to the top.
Then inverse the selection (selct > inverse or commnd-shift-I) and set the gradient opacity to 70% and draw another gradient from top to bottom of that selection.
Voila!
It can be refined more from there. What gives it depth is the thing you put in front of the wall.

If you can toss a corner in there it'll also help to give it depth. But then you have to put anything else in the scene into perspective.

Scott, thanks a ton! That'll get me going.
austizmo, what did you mean about the corner? A side corner?
Here's the gist of what I'm going to end up with. I wanted to use full-length figures without having them floating in space.

Paul Ferrara welcome to PST.
i like your selection of th etwo girls, just wondering if you have a gray stroke around the blue shirt girl, if not you could use the Layer/matting/defring by 1 pixel.
I just thought of this.

Ammar,
Very cool effect! And thanks for the tip on defringe. I knew about that once but had forgotten it.

This is still a work in progress but I thought you might like to see where I'm going with it. I think I might bring the back "wall" down some and I've got other tweaks to make. Further suggestions appreciated.

Agreed. Dropshadows are your friend. This is an image from a post a while ago showing the "before and after" of a drop shadow.

As much as I like females, you might want to add a few dudes in there. It's got a bit of a pervert/womanizer vibe to it. Know what I mean?

Pretend they're guys in drag. Maybe you'd like that better, huh?
