Can anyone please help or advise?

$}

I am running OSX 10.2.6 & a client has given me an Excel file generated from Windows XP. On my mac not all the characters are displayed but worse still, if I try to copy the text to Photoshop 7 I can only seem to work with bitmaps. These are pixelated & having not worked with this text before I am at a loss. The manual references CJK type in the online help, but having set the Asian text option in the preferences I still don't seem to be able to display or work with these characters as text. All I seem to get when pasting into a text field is _ _ _ where characters should be. My document is RGB rather than bitmap. If I try to paste to a new doc by default the options are showing bitmap as the file type.

I would really appreciate some pointers folks!

It looks like you stumped us on this one. All I can think of is to make the text a vector object before bringing it into PS. If you have a program like Illustrator you might try and change the text to a vector object in it.

These are just a suggestion, not a sure thing.

... Cheers Magikman for the advice. In the end I took the laptop to the client & got them to retype the text as it appears under OSX that Chinese type works only by inputting it!

Watching the bewildering array of characters that were available as options during the input process led me to the conclusion that the 50 mins with the client were the best move. I even got a wonderful buffet & another job thrown in for free! So, the message to me was clear... don't be too proud to return to the client to ask for help with something so out of the ordinary.

I am still a student, however, one of my mentors always says, suck the client for whatever information you can, returning to him seemed to have worked, and was the best choice.

Remember, if you had takent he liberty to somehow try and translate it or have it copy over correctly, and it messed up, how pissed would he have been then?

Cheers :)

Sirius, glad to hear it worked out so well for you. A few extra jobs made it worth it to get back to the client.

Now that you are the expert at this I'll be sure to ask you if I have a similar problem.;}
