Curves help

i was just wondering, i was looking through photoshop books in the bookstore today, and most books i read said that curves is one of the most powerful tool in the photoshop arsenal, though i can't seem to get a grasp on it, anyone have any good suggestions? or any tuts online that helps clears it up? i've read some background info on curves, but i can't correct image right, it always seemed missing something.. thanx for the help!

p.s. i donno if i post in the right spot, does it suppose to be in the beginner's forum?
