View Full Version : saturation map

I'm looking for a way to create a saturation map for an image, that is a grayscale where each pixel represents the saturation of each pixel in the original images, from 0,0,0 for no saturation to 100,100,100 for 100% saturation. Does anyone know how this can be achieved?

Its an interesting problem you've posted Derby
If you look in the “goodies” folder of your Photoshop CD for the “HSL/HSB” filter. This will give you three channels still labeled RGB but which are in fact Hue Saturation and Brightness. If you take the Saturation channel that should be your solution.
Apparently older versions of Photoshop (version 2 I think) had an HSB mode.
I think there may also be a way to generate this channel from within an RGB document using either layer blend modes (saturation blend) or calculations, but it will take me a while to get my head around that one. $}

Thanks for your reply, that sounds like the right solution. I reid using the saturation blending mode but that doesn't work. My next approach was to try and find how PS calculates saturation from RGB values and then use calculations.
Does anyone happen to know how PS calculates the saturation of a pixel?

(DB, I'll e-mail you one of these days.)
That tutorial was the most frustrating to research. But I eventually kicked it in the nuts. I do have a few more things to say about HSL/HSB, but I haven't gotten around to it.
Here are some of the better links that I came across:
http://www.paris-pc-gis.com/MI_Enviro/Colors/color_models.htm
http://www1.tip.nl/~t876506/ColorDesign.html
http://elearn.mtsac.edu/olsc/frontpage/books/runfp98/00000/00060.htm
That's about enough out of me on the subject.
Back under my rock I go.

Ok guys,
Something is screwy here. Everyone else seems to be able to follow the links that Stroker puts up for his own page but whenever i try to it gives me an error messages saying that the server doesnt allow access to that area. The exact message is: "You have tried to access the w3.chrlmi.cablespeed.com domain. It does point to this server, but we do not provide Web Access to this domain. If you think that this message is in error, please E-mail to the Postmaster."
I want to bask in the graphical brillance that is Stroker's page too!!!
Any way I can fix this or am I doomed to dwell in ignorance forever?
Thanks cats and kittens, catchya in the funny papers.

Ah, that was before the server name change. Then ran into more problems.
Here is a mirror:

Recently kind of got back into this.

Thanks Stroker,
Will I still be able to view other links or will they all be the same problem?
Thanks again man!

The whole site should be good. Hunted down missing images and links and junk. If something does show up broken, feel free to speak up.

Thanks so much Stroker, I've really been looking forward to reading thru your pages. Especially the ones on displace.
You kick ass.

Dam! I was up all night with this one. Playing around with layer blends etc. In the end I whipped out my trusty copy of PS 1. Eight hundred times smaller that the current CS (small enough to email!) and about as many times as fast. Fully supports HSB. Could only import CS files if they are first saved as tiffs.
Fascinating results! I cant understand why this mode is no longer supported.

Kudos, Rap. If I was still working on Tech-Slop, I would definitely quote you on the front page. If you have any questions about the Displace stuff, just ask.
Jack, what OS are you running?
I'm using XP and I have the hardest time getting some old stuff to run. Then again, I was trying to run DOS games like Redneck Rampage and Shadow Warrior.
No idea why Adobe took out HSL and HSB. At the very least, they should have kept HSB.

Am running PS 1 with the classic environment of OS X.
Has anyone actually managed to do this yet? (generate fake saturation map). I am sure the answer is in layer blends. Sorry if somewhere in all those links the answer lies buried. haven't had time to check them all out.

Mac? Doh!
Yes, the KPT 13 Revisited link has the answer.
Blending mode is only half of the answer. The other half is understanding how Sat is calculated.

Hey gang,
I know its not EXACTLY what youre looking for Jack but it still might help. It seems to work along the same lines though its not calculated on saturation, rather its calculated by tone. If it works for you great, if not hey its still something else useful to know right?

CHeck out the whole site if you get a chance, its a fantastic resource. Especiallly on the technical side of photos and photography. B#

Derby, follow Markzebra's suggestion, the HSB from the goodies folder. I think that Flaming Pear also have a HSB plug-in...
