Long story, but I need to know the name of the file or how the preferences are saved by Photoshop. Can anyone tell me?

PC or Mac.. if Mac what OS?

Mac OS9 they are called Adobe Photoshop PReferences and are inside the preferences folder inside your system folder. Mac OSX they are nammed Adobe Photoshop Prefereces and are inside the library folder for the user the application is installed for or at the root level of your system.

Adobe Photoshop [VERSION]Preferences.psp
It is stored along with all the different preferences: brushes, styles, etc...
In the V7, on NT/2K, etc..., it is stored in :

Winnt/profiles/[username]/Application Data/Adobe/Photoshop/7.0/Adobe Photoshop 7.0 Settings

I gave none of the important info, but still got the answer. Amazing.

I do a lot of Beta testing of software and workflows. My systems can hang more often then normal. I wanted to be able to just restore the settings, brushes etc. This will help.

Holding Ctrl, Alt and Shift when booting also resets the preferences file. (for Mac it will be Cmd, Opt and Shift)

Welcome, Aneas, thanks for sharing!
If one uses your procedure, you have to see the box that asks "do you want to ..." If you don't see it, you have to retry!
But it is indeed the fastest way!
but usually, I rename the pref's extension if I'm just troubleshooting...
