View Full Version : Mirroring Color Range Select Effects?

Ok I was just messing about in Photoshop with a picture and decided to try out the Color Range selection tool and I noticed that at some points the previewed image looked REALLY cool, at some sample points an almost anime-like cartoon smoothness to the image, in others a surreal ghostly effect.
Of course, it's a selection tool and the previewed image is just a tease LOL I can't seem to mirror the effects any way I try. Is there any way to keep the previewed image? I end up just getting a selection (obviously)...what is the previewed image supposed to be showing me?
For instance, going into Color Range and selecting Preview -> Grayscale...the image gets really funky, how do I keep it like that or emulate it with other tools?

Ockham's Razor anyone? Haha didn't even occur to me. Thanks for that "Advanced" tip ;}Greetings FunkDaddy and welcome to PsT,
1) Set your colors to Default (press "d").
2) Make your selection in Color Range (click Okay)
3) Create a New blank layer (above your image layer).
4) Fill the selection with white (cntrl/cmd+backspace).
5) Inverse the selection (cntrl/cmd+shift+i) and fill it with black (alt/opt+backspace).
6) Add a layer behind this and fill it with White.
Should be identical to the Color Range state that you selected in Grayscale.
If you have the know-how, you can easily make this an Action.

As a neat side-effect (pun intended) you can also try this for a different way to make custom black/white conversions or solarization effects:
1) Open your image
2) Reset your color pickers to black and white by pressing "D"
3) Choose Select > Color Range...
4) Set the selection preview to Grayscale
5) Set the fuzziness slider all the way up (200)
6) Move the Color Range palette off to the side but with enough room to see the thumbnail preview
6) Drag the eyedropper thru the image and watch the preview until you get something you like
7) Follow Klatu's instructions from above on filling, inverting, and filling the selections.
Oh nice guys, I will try out these 2 tuts and post if I get anything good! Thanks!
