Maybe this is an easy one, I don't know. I started a new job a few week ago, and the system is pretty much the same as I have been using (Mac os 9.2.2 and PS 6.0.1) Everything worked the same up until last Monday. I haven't made any changes myself (although someone else may have over the weekend)
The last step I make in PS for any print job is to "save a copy as a tif" (cmyk) This has always given me a flattened image with the possible addition of LZW compression. Now when I "save a copy as tif" I get the option to save layers and I have a choice of compression, zip, lzw, or jpg. I also have an option called "save image pyramid" (what is that?)
Any idea what has brought this change?

Jedart,
Without looking it up I can't tell you off hand what they're for (maybe someone else will oblige).
I can however tell you how to turn them off.
Goto Edit > Preferences > Saving Files...
And look to the bottom of the dialogue box, there should be an "Enable advanced TIFF save options" Check box.
Un-check it!;}

These are new to PS 6 and are also used in PS7. They allow you to save a layered tiff file. This may seem cool, but beware that they might not rip properly and the file size is large. I work in prepress and don't recommend saving anything but flattened tif's.

The TIFF format was updated in Photoshop 6. You can actually save a TIFF now with Layers, layer effects, type and everything that a PSD can contain.
The "advantage" with these TIFFs over PSD's is that there is a flattened version saved along with the file. This means that there should be no ripping problem. They were intended so that people can use exactly he same CMYK file to edit as they use to print. Problem is of course they are relatively huge files.
My advice for the moment (until we have 100GB hard drives and everyone is using DVD) is to stick to your old method - uncheck "enable advanced TIFF options".

Thanks guys, that's very helpfull.
I did some reading (in a PS5 bible) and it appears the pyramid thing is some nutty scheme used by 'other' image editing programs to make them appear to edit faster.
Advanced tif options = useless tif options. now to find out who's been messing around with my prefs.
