I have a picture of a bear and i want to make it a simple black vector graphic.
when I try to autofind the contour (so i can simply paint it black) using the transformtool and just moving the picture, it automaticly creates a contour around the image (around the cut-out bear)

unfortunately, when i fill up the selection with a brush (just paint it black on a new layer) and delete the layer underneath of the picture, there are some pieces that are faded out and some pieces are missing.

could the problem be that I work on a pc and i got the picture from a pdf-file created on a mac?

i use photoshop cs2. is there a simpler way to automaticly find the contour of an object?

First, The pc/pdf/mac issue is a non issue; it shouldn't make a difference.

Second, if you want a vector you should use the pen tool. That's the only way to get a vector. your method only produces rasterized pixels.

Third, I can't answer your auto-contour question. I've always just traced things like this with the pen tool. Like this: http://www.kromefx.com/index.php?page=vt&id=60

(Oh and fourth, post the bear picture and you may get some more specific answers -- questions like this usually depend on the image)

third, i'll use the pen tool then, thank you

and forth, i'll do that when i'm at home to explain my problem but thank you already for your help.

How did you "...autofind the contour... using the transform tool"...I'm missing something here..where is the autofind contour...and what does it have to do with the tranform tools?

yes please enlighten me as to where this auto contour button is. Never heard of it in PS.

You could always take it into Illustrator, although I prefer the Freehand (swear word) trace tool. You can set to outline and make a vector image

well, if you have a shape on a layer, press ctrl-A and than you press ctrl-T to transform it, don't change anything, but move the object a little bit and it will automaticly draw a selection around your object.
(works most of the time)

I'll check again tonite if it needs another manipulation, but it should work like this...
