I love layer effects and especially Bevel and Emboss. It gives me a great possibilities for my work and I widely use it. Now I would like to share a technique which is very useful for some projects like 'build interface' for web pages.
Below shown picture with a shape with applied Bevel and Emboss layer effect. Some impovements were made: with Inner Shadow added imitation of reflect to the shape bottom.

Well, if you want to create a small hole within the shape what do you do? A large Bevel effect would not allow it to do because a small hole means small bevel. So, you can use Knockout layer option there: Create a new Layer Set; within one then create a shape layer for small hole; apply *outer-down* Bevel and Emboss effect to the layer and set Knockout option to Shallow.
Note: you could apply not only B&E effect to the layer in knockout mode.

d-signer, I'd like to learn more about blending style methods.
Maybe you could post a layered .psd file for us to examine your settings.

Now we add another hole, a little larger one. As you can see there are also Inner Shadow and Pattern Overlay effects. I put a texts to the couple of new green windows.
Now we need to create a grooves around windows and in other places. Since I don't know English I call it "splits". I have created it with vector paths again. Below shown screen shot where you can observe stack of layers too.
Shape layer named 'splits' has two effects - Color Overlay: white, Linear Dodge (I like this blend mode!), and Drop Shadow: black, Darken (for CMYK it's important because mode 'Multiply' could cause excess of ink limit but Darken there more safe).

Now you can see that green color of window isn't color like 'color overlay' because adjustment layer Hue/Saturation it makes and you can see through the windows. Try to learm more about layer effects by learn how to star was done. :)

To propagate using layer effects I have made up my fake portfolio: http://d-signer.narod.ru/portfolio.htm There just one picture (photo) was using - it's shore of Baikal lake. All the rest elements of design were done with shape layers and layer effects applied to them.
